The Snitch is said to be based on a true story. Dwayne Johnson, also known as The Rock in WWE, plays a father who joins the drug underworld in order to save his son. It is a movie about a man who gets into a lot of trouble and surprisingly, the audience feels his desperation.
It is rare for The Rock to star in a good movie. While Snitch is made with the mainstream action fans in mind, it showcases Johnson’s improved acting skills. This is a vehicle that can broaden the type of roles he can play in the future.
Snitch is directed by longtime stuntman Ric Roman Waugh. It has its dramatic moments in between the fight scenes between drug dealers and other thugs. Johnson is John Matthews, a father who is willing to go past his limit in order to prevent his son Jason (Rafi Gavron) from going to jail for committing one mistake. Jason was busted while delivering a box of Ecstasy as a favor for a friend and in order to try the effect of the drug with his girlfriend.
Snitch is inspired by a Frontline report on the aspect of the law that allows reduced time in exchange for giving information regarding drug dealers. The screenplay is written by Justin Haythe and Waugh. It follows the familiar template but goes a little further with good character development and legal issues that sets it apart from other drug related movies.
John is clean as a whistle who owns a shipping company. He is guilty for not being there for his son after the divorce and he persuades US Attorney Joanne Keeghan (Susan Sarandon) to accept a plan where he will deliver drug dealers to her in exchange for lifting his son’s jail time.
Snitch is memorable, not for its fight scenes, but for the characters and actors. Johnson manages to give out the right emotions required from him and you can expect to see him take on more dramatic roles in the future. He is better than Sarandon’s one dimensional character in the movie.
